Ashok Gehlot sworn in as Rajasthan chief minister 13 dec 2008
JAIPUR: Ashok Gehlot, who spearheaded the Congress campaign and brought it back to power in assembly elections in Rajasthan, was on Saturday
sworn in as chief minister for a second term in office.
57-year-old Gehlot, who was the chief minister between 1998 and 2003, was sworn in at a public ceremony in front of a large number of Congressmen by Governor S K Singh. He was the only one to take oath today. Gehlot, who brings vast political and administrative experience to the job, also as a former Union minister and grassroots worker beat rival claims in the party with his clean image and on the basis of the seasoned campaign in the elections. His election on Thursday as Congress legislative party leader was preceded by intense jockeying for power by rival faction chiefs, including on caste line that some one from the Jat community should be given the top political job. C P Joshi, the party's state unit president who lost by one vote in Nathdwara constituency, was also in the race apart from senior leaders like Union minister Sis Ram Ola and Parasram Maderna, both Jats. There were also ugly scenes of clashes between supporters of Gehlot and Ola in front of the guest house where the central observers, including Digvijay Singh, were staying. |

Jaipur Ashok Gehlot, who spearheaded the Congress campaign to reinstall its government defeating BJP in Rajasthan, was on Thursday chosen to be the new Chief Minister of the state, ending three days of intense jockeying for power by various factions including the jat lobby.

WHO IS ASHOK GEHLOT ?
Ashok Gehlot (born May 3, 1951)in Jodhpur(Mahamandir), and son of Late Shri Lachman Singh Gehlot, is a leader of Indian National Congress party. He was chief minister of the Indian state of Rajasthan from 1 December 1998 to 8 December 2003. Earlier he was an MP in the Lok Sabha & was a junior Minister in the central government of India. He hails from Jodhpur City. His wife's name is Smt. Sunita Gehlot and he has two children, One Son and One Daughter.
Ashok Gehlot as a Chief Minister was alleged to be singly handedly responsible for the worst electoral defeat of the Congress Party in Rajasthan since the first general elections in 1952.

Ashok Gehlot will be new Rajasthan CM
Jaipur Ashok Gehlot, who spearheaded the Congress campaign to reinstall its government defeating BJP in Rajasthan, was on Thursday chosen to be the new Chief Minister of the state, ending three days of intense jockeying for power by various factions including the jat lobby.
57-year-old Gehlot, a former chief minister, was unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party, AICC observer Digvijay Singh, said after intense consultations with MLAs after a CLP meeting authorised Sonia Gandhi to nominate the new leader.
The chief minister-elect told reporters later that he would work to provide an "able, transparent and competent" government that will cater to all the sections, castes and communities of people.
Earlier in the day there were ugly scenes of clash between supporters of Gehlot and Union Minister Sis Ram Ola, a jat, before a state guest house where the AICC observers were staying. The exchanged blows and indulged in fisticuffs before police separated them.

Ashok Gehlot to be new Rajasthan chief minister
Jaipur, Dec 11 (IANS) Ashok Gehlot, former chief minister of Rajasthan, was Thursday evening named leader of the state Congress legislative party, paving the way for his taking over the reins once again.The name of Gehlot, 57, was approved by Congress president Sonia Gandhi after a one-line resolution was passed by the newly-elected MLAs of the party.
Gehlot was chief minister 1998-2003 and has been acknowledged as the main architect of the Congress’ comeback in the state. The Congress wrested Rajasthan from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the assembly elections, winning 96 seats in a house of 200.
After his name was announced, Gehlot told his party supporters that he would provide a transparent and sensitive government, and work to fulfil the promises made in the party’s election manifesto.
Though a formal announcement is still awaited, there were lots of fireworks at the Pradesh Congress Committee office here after Gehlot’s name was selected. He was greeted by slogan shouting supporters, and some lifted him on their shoulders.
According to Congress sources, two of the party MLAs are to be deputy chief ministers.
The date for formal swearing-in has not yet been decided.
The BJP, which ruled the state for the past five years, suffered a shocking defeat, managing to secure only 78 seats.
